Day One

Today felt like Christmas morning for us lol. The anticipation had been building up, and finally, we were embarking on our fixer-upper journey. Brian couldn’t contain his excitement, jokingly admitting that his to-do list and visions of what lay hidden under the carpet had occupied his thoughts even at 3 am. We officially closed on the home around 2 pm, and it was important for us to have the kids with us at the closing appointment.

I vividly remember being a little girl, accompanying my dad to his business presentations, or being involved in my grandparents' entrepreneurial adventures. Those experiences undoubtedly shaped who I am today. Having our kids at the closing table, witnessing the process and soaking it all in, felt like passing on a legacy. As we left, my daughter exclaimed, "That was cool, maybe one day I will be a lawyer." It warmed my heart to see her already dreaming big, influenced by intentional moments as her parents.

The day before, I took my son to transfer funds. Being a math whiz, he was fascinated by the intricacies of swift numbers, wires, and escrow. It was a valuable lesson in real-world finance that he absorbed eagerly.

After the closing, we wasted no time and dove straight into work. Day one was all about cleaning up the front yard and tackling the backyard. A friendly neighbor came over and showed Brian how to get the pool pump running, and to our delight, it started up smoothly. It was a promising start.

One of our top priorities is addressing the exterior of the house. The first company scheduled to come out will be mulching the overgrowth on our spacious one-acre lot, and we can’t wait to see the transformation on day two. The dumpster we rented is already about a quarter full, evidence of our productive day.

Despite a bit of rain slowing us down and a looming track practice for my daughter at 5:45, we managed to accomplish quite a bit. We cleared out the front yard of random pots, rugs, and trash, and made significant progress in the backyard. With the pool equipment up and running, we wrapped up the outdoor tasks and moved inside.

For about three hours of work, we were pleased with our progress. It’s just the beginning, but already, we can feel the excitement building as we breathe new life into this home.

Stay tuned for more updates as our journey unfolds!
